Central Area Dialogue Related to the MDP (Bright Futures Plan)

 Dialogue Questions:
  1. Should we have one City Centre with major downtown redevelopment as suggested in the MDP? or
  2. Should we revitalize downtown as a Heritage Village, which would be a model for other Urban Villages?
  3. Or some other alternative.
Excerpts From the MDP:

Page 12: A growing interest in redevelopment of the older parts of the city accompanies its transformation.

5.3.1.2 Prepare an Area Redevelopment Plan for the City Centre
  • higher density residential development.
5.3.1.7 Develop a Parking Strategy and review parking standards for the City Centre to identify existing and future needs and capacity, problem areas, and options including the feasibility of an at-grade-off-street-parking-facility.

General Metro Quest Comments:

The vision sees the gradual creation of more compact ‘nodes’ of development in key areas in the city leading to more vibrant and walkable downtown areas.
  • revitalize downtown [
  • the potential of a vibrant downtown core where people live and work
  • vibrant ‘small town’ core area with employment and; residences making a lively commercial district
Specific Metro Quest Comments:

  • Consider revitalizing the downtown core between the new medical centre and king street on the park
  • downtown spruce should be less congested with job sites
  • Stay small (17)
Encouragement to consider various amenities
• Make sure we maintain our historical buildings like rebuild the little church.
Spend some money on heritage so we can share our history and sense of
community with future generations
• Let’s start with downtown, including the old pool site!
